Big winners in the Xodus?

As X/Twitter continues to slide slowly into oblivion…. who are the winners and losers? Well straight away the loser is X itself which has seen a massive slide in user numbers, however it is really difficult to gauge as X itself no longer divulges user numbers. A figure I have seen quoted quite often reckons X could have lost 50 million users recently with a lot of celebs and users with large amounts of followers publicly saying they have left. If I was to guess I’d say that X probably lost 25 million users, but a larger percentage simply no longer visit instead of quitting completely. I’d fully imagine that the figure for the MAU would now be under 300 million worldwide, as Threads goes over 300 million. This of course means that one of the winners is threads – however everyone don’t get too excited as I have it on good authority that changes including ads and paid subs are coming real soon to Threads, most thinking early in 2025. This will totally change Threads, personally I think for the worst, and would be enough for me to stop posting as much. Bluesky has been saying it has gained 30 million in the latest changes, and if that is true then it makes it the real winner here. Going from just over 15 million to 50 million (estimated) in the last 6 weeks is a great gain – however I have not seen anywhere like that increase in engagement for me. The last winner is Mastodon which has seen a more modest increase, but at least as far as I can see there are now more than a million regular users again after it has been hovering just under the figure for a while. However, for me, I have seen less and less happening on Mastodon and I think this is simply down to retention being pretty damn awful! People arrive, look around for a while and then leave because the figures and engagement compared to other platforms is just so poor. I get less, but better engagement in general on the fediverse, so go figure….
