I have taken a quick look around to find out the Monthly Average User figures for the “main” social media platforms, including such things as Youtube and TikTok as we have seen some serious moves upwards AND downwards so far in 2024. The winners include Threads and Bluesky and the losers are Facebook and X/Twitter.
To add some context here it is estimated that Social Media useage is as follows :
- Total number of social media users is estimated at around 5.2 billion
- Just over 64% of the population uses Social Media
- Average Time daily spent on Social Media is about 2 hours and 20 mins
- The US has the largest percentage of Social Media users for a country with 70.1% which equates to over 237 million
- Globally Social Media usage is split roughly 56% male and 46% female
- 95% of Internet users use Social Media
- Mobile phone users have a 92% usage of Social Media
So on to the figures ranked roughly in order of MAU figures
- Facebook – 3 billion plus users monthly
- Youtube – 2.5 billion users monthly
- Whats App – 2.1 billion users monthly
- Instagram – 2 billion users monthly
- TikTok – 1 billion users monthly
- Snapchat – 750 million users monthly
- Pinterest – 465 million monthly
- Reddit – 430 million users monthly
- X/Twitter – 310 million user monthly
- Threads – 275 million monthly users
This list is slightly curated as wechat is mainly Chinese so I haven’t included its 1.2 billion estimated MAU and there are widely varying X/Twitter MAU figures because X no longer announces figures as it is now a private company. Basically the lowest figures say that X is now around the same amount of MAU as Threads and is dropping quicker than Threads is currently growing with estimates saying that in early 2025 threads will overtake X in MAU. The Facebook figures are also open to interpretation with many saying that 3 billion is way over the MAU with some saying that Instagram actually has more MAU now with its 2 billion users as many users appear to use Facebook rarely. The Youtube figures also appear to be inflated as manu users have multiple accounts based around channels so it is possible that the MAU is more like about 1.25 billion to around 1.5 billion. These figures are based on around 10 sources, and I’ll be honest the variations on some are huge with one source saying X was more than 500 million MAU but I seriously doubt that figure is anywhere near accurate as X appears to be the big loser recently with the constant upheaval on that platform. Same as facebook, getting accurate figures seems impossible as Facebook is also privately owned and appears to vastly inflate its figures so that also includes other Meta products like Whats App, Instagram AND Threads!
