I have seen recently (well since the US election) that many have decided that enough is enough, including some high profile celebs AND The Guardian have left X/Twitter with many deciding that Bluesky is the place nowadays. Now I’m glad that many are deserting X, I mean the failure couldn’t happen to a nicer idiot, but Bluesky is it better? Well yes and erm no. Bluesky was setup as a side project at Twitter originally and although it is better in some ways it still really suffers from a lot of the same issues as Twitter and then X suffered. It has funding from a lot of people, but at some stage that funding will mean ads will come along with subscription models etc. Nowadays the costs associated with bigger platforms means they simply have to advertise and try and get as much cash as they can simply to continue to prosper. I worry that Bluesky will be exactly the same as X in a few years as it shared many ideals. But what I have to say is that it is going to have a hard time beating Threads right now as that continues to grow and will soon outstrip X in MAU – maybe before the end of 2024. As soon as the amount of users is big enough Bluesky will start asking for money and bombard you with ads, it just has to. Same as I have been told multiple times that Threads will start with ads in 2025 I imagine as soon as it does Bluesky will also follow…
In other related news I am seeing a few people come back to FB, though that seems to be just a short term thing as many have already decided to make their homes elsewhere. In fact the amount of people saying on FB that they are going to Bluesky has jumped massively. The days of having 1 main social media ccount appear to be well over, as I said a few years ago! Only old school users stick to one these days…
