Since Meta announced that it is going down the X route of checking content HERE I have started to see that they are actively filtering and cenoring way more content. The amount of my friends on the platform saying that they struggle to link to content outside of FB has erupted into a majority. Now here is the issue, I know a lot of my older friends do not want to move away from FB having got the majority of their social media content on their, and their friends, but for me (and a lot of others) the tipping point of where FB is deemed useful seems to have been met…
At the moment, I believe that the best way to use FB is to use a different Meta product, say Threads, and then use that to post across to FB for people who are not on threads yet. This seems to (mainly) get around the restrictions, though some are seeing even this no longer works 100% of the time.
This bizarre censoring seems to be a way to align FB and other Meta products with the Trump administration, but also a way to segment their portfolio. FB is now the old fashioned social media platform, with an older user base, and the censoring is probably more welcomed by those who post less content and more just seeing what their friends are doing, but unfortunately these changes have also limited what EVERYBODY sees as the adverts and other things now just clutter up the news feed and replace the feeds with rubbish that nobody wishes to see…
Long term I feel the only way to change things is to migrate away from FB – threads is currently ad free, but won’t stay that long for ever and so is Bluesky – again I can’t see it being ad free for long either. If it is photos or video you want then Instagram is currently a better bet, though I am seeing a decline there too due to Metas increasingly ridiculous changes that seem to happen on a daily basis! Perhaps the total long strategy is to leave Meta altogether and go back to small platforms on your interest groups with forums, platforms etc. However – please don’t go all out on Discord. It is a chat platform at heart and the content is NOT searchable. Yes things are changing, but for me personally it all seems a bit of a backwards step or 3!
